A History of Cutting Edge Innovation

Founded in 1880 as Benjamin F. Kelley & Company, Harsco Industrial Patterson-Kelley has evolved over the years, continually adapting to lead the marketplace. The company’s first product, feed water heaters, introduced pioneering technology with tube bundles. After World War II, the company’s focus shifted from storage water heaters to more complicated, custom engineered heat exchangers and other heat transfer products.

Following its 1974 acquisition by Harsco Corporation, Patterson-Kelley continued to lead the marketplace. In 1987, the company entered the gas fired commercial boiler industry, and innovation continues today with recent developments such as the P-K SONIC and P-K MACH condensing boilers which helps our customers reduce their fuel bills.

1880Benjamin F. Kelley, founder of Benjamin F. Kelley & Son, forms a company that manufactures Kelley-Berryman feed water heaters.
1898Frank L. Patterson joins Benjamin F. Kelley & Son in 1894 as the New England District Manager. In 1898, he leaves Benjamin F. Kelley & Son to form his own company, Frank L. Patterson & Co. in New York.
1917Benjamin F. Kelley & Son merges with Frank L. Patterson & Co. to form Patterson-Kelley Company.
1919Patterson-Kelley Company moves to its present facilities in East Stroudsburg, PA after steady growth creates the need for a larger facility.
1920Widely known as the pioneer of copper-lined storage water heaters, some of Patterson-Kelley’s equipment has been in constant use for over 40 years.
1930Many of New York City’s most prominent buildings are equipped with Patterson-Kelley water heaters including the United Nations Building, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Metropolitan Museum of Art and New York Public Library.
1940After World War II the business focus shifted from storage water heaters to more complicated, custom engineered heat exchangers and other commercial and industrial products.
1974Patterson-Kelley Company is acquired by Harsco Corporation.
1987Patterson-Kelley enters the gas-fired commercial boiler industry, developing new cutting edge products that solve customers’ most challenging problems..
2003Patterson-Kelley develops and launches the P-K MACH® ultra-high efficiency condensing boiler - the first condensing boiler to feature a cast aluminum sectional heat exchanger in the North American market.
2009Patterson-Kelley Co. embraces a new company identity as Harsco Industrial Patterson-Kelley. By uniting all of Harsco’s divisions under one identity, we can better serve our customers by using our collective expertise to deliver unique, value-added solutions on a global scale.
2012Harsco Industrial Patterson-Kelley reintroduces the Patterson-Kelley product brand name and continues to lead the commercial heating market with green technology and innovative products.
